Understanding what you read at the time of reading it, is not the same thinking process as remembering, or being able to reproduce it.

Comprehension is part of retention and recall, but recalling is a different thinking process.

The material read cannot be reproduced verbatim as it was on the page, but one’s mind summarises and rearranges the information in the light of many variable factors, such as interest, background knowledge and purpose.
